Israel launched the airstrikes overnight

No rocket fire or other Palestinian militant attacks have been reported since Israel launched the airstrikes overnight and into Tuesday, breaking a ceasefire with Hamas that gained hold in January. The Israeli shelling persisted into Wednesday, but at a diminished level. The Gaza Health Ministry reported at least 436 killed, including 183 children and 94 women, since Israel began the strikes early Tuesday. It reported another 678 injured.

Military claims that it only targets militants

The military claims that it only targets militants and attributes civilian casualties to Hamas due to the fact that it operates in populated neighborhoods. Gaza Health Ministry statistics do not differentiate between combatants and civilians. The military stated in a statement that as part of the new offensive, it attacked dozens of militants and militant bases on Wednesday, including the headquarters of a Hamas battalion.

The Gaza war, suspended in January by a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas brokered internationally, has been one of the deadliest conflicts for humanitarian staff in history, says the UN.
